Mourne Mountains Elopement Guide

Why Elope in the Mourne Mountains?

The Mourne Mountains are one of my favourite places for couples who want an elopement that feels wild, relaxed and completely their own.

You do not need to hike for hours or climb the biggest peak to have an amazing day here. Some of the best Mourne locations are short walks from the car, while others are better for couples who want a proper mountain adventure.

My biggest tip is this: please do not pick the mountain first.

Pick your date, tell me you love the Mournes, and I’ll help choose the right location for your day. I’ll look at the sunset direction, weather, light, wind and how much walking you’re comfortable with. Sometimes the best looking mountain on paper is not the best one for photos because the sun disappears behind another peak too early.

That’s why having a photographer who knows the Mournes makes a big difference.

The light in the Mournes changes massively throughout the year.

In summer, the evenings are long, with daylight often lasting until around 10pm and early morning light starting before 5am. In winter, it gets dark much earlier, so the whole timeline needs to be tighter.

That is why I always recommend picking your date first, then I’ll help choose the right Mourne location based on the light, sunset direction, weather and how much walking you want to do.

Sometimes the best plan is not the biggest hike. It is the location with the best light, the right views and enough time for you to actually enjoy the day.

I’d also recommend staying in a cosy cottage nearby rather than a fancy hotel. A cottage gives you space to breathe. You can have coffee in the garden, write your vows somewhere quiet, enjoy the morning together, then get dressed without rushing before heading into the mountains.

That’s the kind of Mourne elopement I love. Simple, relaxed, a bit wild and full of real moments.

Best Time Of Year For A Mourne Mountains Elopement

The Mourne Mountains are beautiful all year round, but the light, weather and timing can change a lot depending on the season.

spring: march to may

Spring is fresh, quiet and a lovely time for couples who want softer light and fewer people around.

Sunrise is usually around 6am to 7.30am, and sunset can be around 6.30pm to 9pm as the season moves closer to summer.

It can still feel cold, especially higher up in the mountains, so warm layers and waterproofs are still a good idea.

summer: june to august

Summer gives you the longest days, which is amazing for relaxed elopements.

In peak summer, it can get bright before 5am and stay bright until around 10pm. That means there is loads of time for a slow cottage morning, vows, exploring, sunset photos and blue hour.

It can feel warm on calm days, but the Mournes can still be windy and cool, especially near the top, so do not trust the sunshine too much.

autumn: september to november

Autumn is one of my favourite times in the Mournes.

The colours are richer, the skies feel moodier, and the light can be gorgeous. Sunrise is usually around 6.30am to 8am, and sunset moves from around 8pm in September to around 4.30pm by late November.

It starts getting colder, wetter and softer underfoot, so boots and layers are a must.

winter: december to february

Winter can be dramatic, quiet and beautiful, but the days are much shorter.

Sunrise is usually around 8am to 8.45am, and sunset can be around 4pm to 5.30pm. That means the timeline needs to be tighter and we need to plan carefully.

It can feel freezing in the mountains, especially with wind, rain or fog, but if you love moody weather and quiet landscapes, winter can be incredible.

The best season depends on the kind of day you want. Pick your date first, then I’ll help choose the right Mourne location based on the light, weather, sunset direction and how much walking you want to do.

Blue Lough

Difficulty: Easy
Walk Distance: Around 4km to 8km
Elevation: Around 300m to 460m
Best For: Lake views, valley scenes and dramatic mountain backdrops

Blue Lough is stunning, but it can be wet and boggy, especially outside summer. When conditions are good, it gives you that proper mountain lake feeling without needing to climb a peak.

Hare’s Gap (Trassey Track)

Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Walk Distance: Around 4km
Elevation: Around 180m
Best For: Wide valley views and a proper Mourne feeling

Hare’s Gap is great if you want big open valley views without going too extreme. It can be windy, but it has a lovely sense of depth and space, which works beautifully for elopement photos.

Wee Binnian

Difficulty: Moderate
Walk Distance: Around 3.9km
Elevation: Around 512m
Best For: Granite tors and dramatic mountain scenery

  • Wee Binnian is for couples who want a bit more adventure. It has that rugged Mourne look with rocky ground and big views, but it’s better suited to couples who are comfortable walking on uneven mountain terrain.

Tollymore Forest Park

Difficulty: Easy
Walk Distance: Around 2km to 5km
Elevation: Low
Best For: Forest scenes, shelter and relaxed woodland photos

  • Tollymore is perfect if the mountain weather is not playing nice. It has forest paths, stone bridges, rivers and loads of atmosphere. It’s also a great option for couples who want a softer, woodland feeling instead of big exposed mountain views.

MUCKISH MOUNTAIN & POISONED GLEN

Slieve Doan

Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Walk Distance: Around 7km return, or shorter if stopping near Slieve Loughshannagh
Elevation: Around 583m
Best For: Mountain summit views and lake scenery

  • Slieve Doan is one of the most rewarding Mourne locations. You can go for the full summit if you want the bigger adventure, or we can keep it shorter by stopping around Slieve Loughshannagh. It gives that real mountain feeling without being one of the hardest hikes.

Practical Tips

  • Clothing & Gear: Dress in layers (base/insulating/waterproof). Good walking boots are a must – formal shoes won’t cut it on rocky or boggy trails.

  • Timing: Summer days are long here. Sunrise is ~5am and sunset ~10pm in June, so you can shoot golden light late or early. Always check weather and allow extra daylight for mountain hikes.

  • Accommodation: Choose a secluded cottage over a hotel. A countryside cottage lets you relax with coffee in the garden, pen vows in private, and gear up at leisure before your shoot.
