What Ireland Weather Is Really Like for Elopements

This guide is mainly for couples travelling to Ireland for their elopement, but it helps anyone planning an outdoor day here.

I’ve been photographing weddings for over 20 years and have shot more than 800 weddings across Ireland. These days, I focus fully on adventure elopements.

After photographing over 100 outdoor elopements, one thing always comes up.

The weather.

Ireland weather has a reputation, and fair enough. But rain, wind, and mist here are not mistakes.

They are part of the atmosphere.

Rain doesn’t ruin an elopement in Ireland.
It’s what makes it feel like Ireland.

Once you understand how the weather actually works here, it becomes something you work with, not against.

Some of the most emotional elopements I’ve ever photographed happened in mist, wind, and light rain.

Why Ireland Feels Colder Than It Looks

Ireland is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. That means the air is nearly always holding moisture.

So even at:
• 10°C
• 12°C
• 15°C

It can feel much colder than expected, especially near the coast, on cliffs, or in the mountains.

Wind plus damp air gets through layers quickly. That’s why locals always say: “It’s not the cold, it’s the damp.”

If you’re used to dry cold in parts of the United States or mainland Europe, Ireland can feel colder even when the temperature looks mild.

Ireland Weather by Season

NOVEMBER TO MARCH
Colder, wetter, and windier. Shorter days. You’ll need proper warm layers.

APRIL TO MAY
Cool and changeable. Can be lovely, but still needs layers.

JUNE TO SEPTEMBER
Best chance of more settled weather. Warmer days, but evenings still feel cool, especially outdoors.

OCTOBER
A mix of everything. Calm one minute, wild the next. Often beautiful, sometimes dramatic, sometimes both.

TIP

leggings under dresses

Wear skin matching leggings underneath instead of black.
They blend in better when walking or lifting the dress and don’t stand out in photos.

Rain on Your Elopement Day

We don’t cancel for rain. We go ahead and work with it. In fact, I love when it rains. That’s when Ireland really shows up.

Rain in Ireland is usually light and passing, not heavy all day. And honestly, this is where the magic happens.

Overcast skies give soft, even light. No harsh shadows, no squinting, just clean, natural tones. Mist adds depth to the landscape, wind brings movement, and everything feels more alive.

Some of the best moments happen when we just pause for a few minutes, let a shower pass, and then step back out into fresh air and unreal light. That’s when the magic kicks in.

what to wear

This is where most couples get caught out.

Ireland’s weather is not about temperature.
It’s about damp air and wind.

Bring:
• Waterproof boots
• A proper jacket or coat
• Layers you can take on and off

Even in summer, you’ll feel it when standing still during your ceremony.

TIP

bring layers

Bring a proper jacket, even in summer. Damp air and wind make a big difference.

Little Extras That Help

Standing around is when you feel the cold most.

I always carry a few extras like jackets and bits in my bag if needed. You don’t need to overthink it, just come prepared and relaxed.

Final Thought

DO NOT plan your elopement around a weather app.

Plan for wind, damp air, and changeable conditions.

That’s when Ireland looks its best. That’s when it feels real.

Rain doesn’t ruin your elopement.
It makes it feel like Ireland.

RAIN, WIND, MIST OR SUNSHINE.
IRELAND DOES IT ALL.

LET’S EMBRACE IT AND MAKE IT PART OF YOUR DAY.
